Mind in Bexley is pleased to present the evaluation of the Carers in Mind service, funded by the London Borough of Bexley’s Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) programme.

Conducted by Dr. David Palmer, this evaluation highlights the experiences of mental health carers, examining the support they receive and how their caregiving roles impact their wellbeing. Through interviews with 15 carers, the research identifies their pathways to support, the challenges they encounter, and the importance of Mind in Bexley community resources in enhancing their carers experience.

Bexley’s Carers Strategy demonstrates a commitment to supporting unpaid carers, aiming to improve their quality of life and ensure they receive necessary assistance.

The Mind in Bexley Carers Service provides essential psychosocial support, offering emotional guidance, practical tools, and access to peer-support networks in a safe and confidential environment. This support helps carers feel valued and understood throughout their journey.

With rising demand for mental health services, the evaluation aimed to better understand carers’ experiences and needs to enhance service delivery. Participants reported significant improvements in mental health and wellbeing, including increased self-care, emotional resilience, and empowerment, leading to reduced burnout and greater stability.

Dr. David Palmer remarked:

“The Carers service has profoundly impacted our community, becoming an essential resource within Mind in Bexley that supports the wellbeing of those residents who care for others.”

One of the people interviewed for the evaluation said about the Carers service:

“It has given me useful tools to try. Given me a space to talk. The unconditional regard and the space have helped me massively.”
