Annual health checks for people with severe mental health conditions (SMI)

Mind in Bexley has launched a campaign to highlight the importance of people with a severe mental illness (SMI), including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, having physical health checks – through their GP/local health centre.

Why is a Physical Health Check important?

People with serious mental illness (SMI) face a higher risk of physical health issues.

An annual physical health check is crucial as it can help identify potential health concerns early on. Conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory issues, and some types of cancer can often be detected through these checks, leading to timely treatment and better outcomes.

Who is Eligible?

Adults aged 18 and older who are registered on their GPs SMI register and have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and/or psychosis are eligible for a free physical health check.

What Does the Physical Health Check Involve?

This appointment provides an opportunity to discuss any health concerns and includes:

  • A general check-in to assess how the person is feeling and any additional needs they may have.
  • Measurement and screening of weight, diabetes risk, heart health, and their impacts.
  • Conversations around lifestyle habits such as physical activity, diet, smoking, and alcohol use.
  • Ensuring access to routine screenings for early detection of potential issues.
  • Discussion of health improvement options, including referrals to services that support health goals.

Patients can also bring a friend or family member for support.

Accessing a Check

Patients, or their family members or carers, can request a physical health check through their GP surgery.

Are these the same as the Mind in Bexley Wellbeing and Physical Health Checks?

No, the Mind in Bexley Wellbeing and Physical Health Checks offer Recovery Service clients the opportunity to have their blood pressure and weight recorded and are completed by a Mind in Bexley staff member.

To help clients to access their physical health checks you can start the process with us by having your weight and blood pressure checked (at our Devonshire Road office?). We will pass your readings to your GP practice where you can complete the remaining checks.
