Mind in Bexley staff joined Welling Station birthday celebration

Staff from Mind in Bexley attended the 130th anniversary celebration of the opening of Welling train station. The event took place on the Station Approach on Thursday 1st May in glorious weather and attracted a constant flow of visitors.

Organised by Southeastern, the event was well attended and visited by dignitaries including the MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup Louie French, and the Mayor of Bexley Sue Gower MBE.

The crowds were also treated to a selection of songs performed by the choir from Hook Lane Primary School in Welling. There were also very welcome free refreshments and ice cream for the public enjoying the hot weather.

Damian Sirso, our Mind in Bexley Engagement and Fundraising Officer, said: “Thanks to everyone who came and said hello to us at the event. There was a steady stream of people dropping by for a chat. We’d also thank Southeastern and Discover Welling for organising such a great event and inviting us – we were delighted to help celebrate the anniversary.”

Welling station was opened in 1895 and forms a part of the Bexleyheath Line that runs between Lewisham and Dartford, with the station being 11 miles from London Charing Cross. It was initially served by steam trains until the electrification of the line in 1926 and Welling station now serves around 1.5million passengers a year.
