Mind in Bexley fundraiser shares London Marathon experience

Mind in Bexley fundraiser Claire Snowden-Bird has reflected on an inspiring London Marathon run, after taking on the world-famous 26.2-mile challenge to raise funds for Mind in Bexley.

Claire represented the charity at this year’s event, joining more than 50,000 participants on the streets of London for one of the biggest days in the running calendar.

For Claire, the marathon was not only a major personal challenge, but also a deeply meaningful experience – raising funds for the charity that she previously worked for.

We spoke to Claire about her London Marathon experience, the moments that stood out and what inspired her to raise funds for Mind in Bexley.

How did the London Marathon go for you, and what was the experience like on the day?

I loved it!

I had a couple of bad training runs which knocked my confidence, but having friends and family on the course along with all the crowds was such an incredible boost.

Was there a particular moment during the race that really stood out for you?

The points where I saw friends and family were amazing. They really lifted me. Hearing my ex-colleague Sophie shout my name came at exactly the right time in the race, when my legs were aching and I was starting to struggle. Two miles further down, with only 5k to go, my friends and family were all cheering in their blue Mind t-shirts.

I also loved the community spirit. The topless DJ stood on a balcony with a big sign behind him saying ‘SE7 welcomes all marathon runners’ was amazing! I ran with a friend for the first half and we were talking about how much the marathon brings everyone together in a really positive way.

What inspired you to take on the London Marathon in support of Mind in Bexley?

Having worked for Mind in Bexley for two years, I know what valuable work they do. I’ve watched the London Marathon for years on the TV and always said, if I was going to do one, it would be London. Having the opportunity to run in aid of Mind in Bexley at such an iconic event was a real privilege.

What are your future running plans, and do you have another challenge in mind?

When training was going tough, I said I’d never do another Marathon! Now I’m hoping to run London again next year with my stepson, and my friend is messaging me on a daily basis about other marathons around the world.

Mind in Bexley would like to thank Claire for her continued support and we look forward to hearing about her future marathon efforts.
