Our Digital Accelerator: Life Stories Research revealed an urgent need for targeted training on mental health. The Digital Accelerator Project offered one free place for every Bexley GP practice on the 2-day accredited Mental Health First Aid training program. We also invited all MIB social prescribers to attend.

This extensive two-day course covered:

  • An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or Mind services.

1 Free place offered to every Bexley GP practice

50% of Bexley GP practices took up a space on the training

LEARNINGS

  • A number of our client’s felt there was a lack of understanding and sensitivity from gatekeepers on the frontlines. These clients said they would either give-up or alternatively escalate their behaviour for the attention they felt they needed, both of which could be minimised/avoided with appropriate training.
  • Busy surgeries find it difficult to take 2 full days for training so a one-day Digital Champions certificate is being explored as an alternative for future training offers.
  • We identified a need for ongoing support post MHFA training so initiated a monthly group for MHFA First Aiders and Champions – a helpful place to check-in.

“The facilitator is great! I’d definitely recommend this course and I feel like it is going to benefit me and my patient’s.”

“Really enjoyed the course and it was an eye-opener. I’m someone who deals with these issues on a regular-ish basis, and after doing this course I have realised I had and still definitely have a lot to learn as a mental health first aider. I will definitely be using the content I’ve learned in practice, but also help to better my team of colleagues with the information I’ve been given. Thank you!”
